OK. I think it was the MSI stage (sorry) and I can't reproduce the problem now
myself on a different Win 98 PC with a slower CPU. It was like some kind of IRQ
hangup, or the installer running with real-time priority, but I probably more
like the former. I'll close this, but might still try to identify what factors
are involved.
