I don't get why it broke before the fix, and what the fix really changes, but
you probably know what you're doing.

Just one thing: for a change such as this, especially if it introduces a define
merely named WORKAROUND, it is good style to add a comment saying *what* is
actually being worked around. Else, don't be surprised if one year later,
somebody accidentally removes the work around while doing other changes.
