Note that the same phenomenon also occurs between other characters if the same
type. For example, you could use a parenthesis instead of the bracket or even a
curly brace and would still see the problem. Likewise if you replace the « with
a ”. (The last two special characters were Alt-0171 and Alt-0148 on Windows,
respectively, just in case they get corrupted in this comment.)
