To verify that the font embedding makes the difference in file size (thanks 
troodon!) please use
e.g. acroread's dialog File->DocumentProperties->Fonts to check which fonts get 
embedded by which 
application.

The point of PDF ("Portable Document Format") is to make documents portable 
between different 
computers. An assumption that any target system has all the fonts the source 
system has is usually 
wrong, so OOo defaults to embed all fonts or their used subsets. The only 
exception are fonts like "Times" 
which are in Adobe's "base 14 font list".
