I just read the comment from TL and imho the test case does not match.

First I wondered if OpenOffice.org uses different code for embedded and not
embedded math objects. But then I noticed that the test case you're using does
not apply to the problem because your just saving the text document without
touching the math object while the latter is the case when using odf files.

Try this one: Create a text document, embedd a simple math object (e.g. a = b +
c). Save it as A. Open A, save it as B - everything ok. Open A, touch the math
object by doubleclicking it so that the math editor opens. Close the math editor
by clicking the empty page without changing anything and save it as C.

As you can see then in C the settings.xml has increased size which is caused by
duplication of some items. Just as it does for odf files.

By the way I didn't think of using odf files could be that unusual :-)
