I regularly have problems with oowriter freezing my computer. This generally
seems to occur when I start oowriter with a new document (whether from email or
a web page) which I wish to print. These files tend to be doc files. I click on
the File menu, and the computer freezes. The mouse is responsive, but nothing
else is. The File menu appears as a pressed-button, without displaying the
menu. I cannot use the keyboard to switch to another console.
Using ssh from another machine and killing oowriter did not help, the one time
I tried it. Killing X gave me a working pc again.
I use Gentoo, but I have seen this issue reported by others using Ubuntu and
Debian
e.g.
http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-openoffice%40lists.debian.org/msg14636.html
and
