I do a lot of documents where I have one bold word in the middle of a sentence.
When typing, I try to do this like so:

1. Start typing the line.
2. Hit control-b to start bold formatting.
3. Type the bolded word.
4. Hit control-b again to turn off bold formatting and continue typing normal
text.

At step 4, this process holds up - I hit control-b again (or click the bold
button in the toolbar) and bold doesn't turn off. I can work around this by
typing the next couple of letters in bold, then highlighting them and unbolding
them. If I try to type two spaces, then move the cursor back one and unbold, the
button and hotkey both respond, but they unbold the word I want in boldface.

This problem is also there for underline, but not, surprisingly, when I use
italic. I save my documents in .doc format, but this problem still holds before
I save a file.
