I can confirm that this is how the application functions.

Also I can add that this is a very common new user error and complaint heard in
the user forums. This is not how you open an MDB file however. 

The question is, I suppose, if there should be some notification to the user
that they have attempted to perform an action not supported, or more accurately
perhaps, that they have gone about an action in an inappropriate fashion.

For instance when the user attempts to open an mdb file directly, or accdb, or
dbf it would be beneficial if the application could put up a meaningful error
message directing them to use the "Connect to existing database" function
instead of the "Open existing database", which refers to exisiting Base files 
only.

Changing the Issue from DEFECT to ENHANCEMENT therefore and setting keyword -
usability
