------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Feb 21 23:20:10 +0000 2008 ------- OpenOffice.org Writer 2.1 always crashes when I am saving in *.DOC format for Windows XP and text contains hyperlinks with % signs. This occurs ONLY when I save in the Windows XP format AND the document contains hyperlinks with _ OR % characters in them. This occurs no matter how I save--that is, whether I save a document with the "file > save as" OR "file > save" OR the "save" icon. Crashes occur ONLY when I save in the *.DOC, 97/Windows XP format of OpenOffice.org Writer 2.1; They DO NOT occur when I save with earlier Formats of MS Word, e.g. the 96, 95, and earlier versions. HOWEVER, when saving in THOSE EARLIER *.DOC formats, OpenOffice.org Writer 2.1 invariably STRIPS ALL HYPERLINKS from the document saved. After saving, in other words, when the document is reopened, each and every embedded hyperlink, whether contained in a word, or typed independently in the document, is DEAD. I am a professional writer, and I have lost countless hours of research over the past 8 months due to this MAJOR CRASH problem. If it is not fixed soon, I may be forced to all together abandon Linux, although I love it otherwise, and have been using Mandriva without problem, and earlier versions of OpenOffice WITHOUT PROBLEMS for the last FOUR years. This problem began when I installed OpenOffice.org 2.1 on the Mandriva 2007 system, at least 8 months ago. While the crash ALWAYS happens when I save in MS WORD/XP format, it was exceedingly difficult even to determine what specific issue caused the crashes. That discovery process took at least 4 months, during which I was assisted by Scott Grayban, an MS in Computer Science and a Mandriva package writer with access to my system. In attempting to repair the Crashing issue, Scott a) recompiled OpenOffice.org from scratch, b) examined every setting on my OpenOffice.org program, against his own c) reinstalled a newer version of Java (1.6.0) d) examined my Mandriva kernel for bugs (and found none) It was only when I happened to save a document with several dozen hyperlinks, BUT NO % or _ characters in ANY of those hyperlinks that I isolated this issue to that specific cause. According to Scott, a % can be used within commands in the Linux universe, but SHOULD NOT cause OpenOffice.org Writer 2.1 crashes when saving *.DOC documents in the Windows/XP/1997 format. But it DOES. Since I discovered that SINGLE VARIABLE about 4 weeks ago, I have tested and retested this issue dozens of times. And OpenOffice.org 2.1 Writer ALWAYS crashes when a) I save in the *.DOC Windows/XP/1997 format and b) have active hyperlinks in the document that contain % OR _ characters. When NEITHER of those characters occurs within active hyperlinks, the documents save normally in the *.DOC WindowsXP/1997 format. My Java 1.6.0 Environment works fine with all other programs (excepting one proprietary Java applet-based program at an online firm.) My OpenOffice 2.1 Writer works fine in all the LINUX based formats--e.g. odt, sxw, Star Writer, and so on. I previously had NO PROBLEMS saving in the Windows/XP format on earlier versions of OpenOffice.org Writer. But since installing this version of OpenOffice Writer, I have had trouble of a CRITICAL NATURE. I searched your bug database and found no similar reports of this issue. But I've experienced this bug consistently, WITH EVERY USE of OpenOffice.org Writer, since installing OpenOffice 2.1 Writer on my Mandriva 2007 system last year. I can submit articles and manuscripts to publications ONLY in the *.DOC format. Publishers DO NOT have access to Linux. Even Mac uses MS Word for MAC. Thus, at present, I am forced to edit MS Word documents on Google Document. Needless to say, this is unacceptable. I do hope you can resolve this problem. And thank you in advance for ANYTHING your programmers can do to eliminate this bug from an otherwise exemplary set of programs! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
