You must have at least one sub-expression (i.e., a pattern in parentheses) in
the "Search for" pattern in order to use the sub-expressions in the replace 
field.

Try this...

Search for: (.*)
Format: italic
Replace with: [i]$1[/i]

This works for me, except it adds an extraneous 'x' character following the
matching text in each replacement.

That should be reported as a separate issue, I think.

This requirement is rather counter intuitive; perhaps there needs to be a
default "Search for" pattern of '(.*)' when a format-search is active and the
"Search for" field is empty.
