2008 -------
I went back and uninstalled (rpm -ev) all of the openoffice rpms, reinstalled
2.3.1 (as root) from the original tarball
(OOo_2.3.1_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz) by untarring the files, su,
cd'ing into the OOG directory it created, and running setup. I opened all of
the office applications to make sure everything worked.

So far so good.

Then I untarred the 2.4.0 files
(OOo_2.4.0_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz), went into the OOH directory as
root, ran setup again. It told me it was going to install 2.4.0 into directory
/opt/openoffice.org2.3, which was fine, and the installation compeleted as
before (errors on all the menus - see bug report 87887, which is confirmed).

I clicked on the main menu, went up to Office and tried to open the writer. An
error window popped up with the following (tranlsated from the graphic)
contents:
-----
Could not launch menu item

Failed to execute child process
"openoffice.org2.4" (No such file or directory)
-----
This window included the white X in the red octagon on the upper left side and
the OK button on the lower right. I'd send you the image, but this is a text
only interface, so....

I then went to the menu and added the launcher to my panel so I could see its
properties. Sure enough, it looks (roughly) like this:
-----
            Type: Application
[No Icon] Name: OpenOffice.org 2.4 Writer
         Command: openoffice.org2.4 -writer %U [Browse]
Comment: Create and edit text and graphics in letters, reports,
documents and Web pages by using Writer.

[Help] [Revert] [Close]
-----
(The Revert button is grayed out.)

I have saved the png's if you would like to see them.

This is exactly the same problem I had last time around.

I am running CentOS 5.1 with the 2.6.18-53.1.14 kernel, Gnome 2.16.0 on an AMD
64X2 with 4GB memory and 800+GB of disk.

I tried this:

ln -s /opt/openoffice.org2.3 /opt/openoffice.org2.4

as root, but that had no effect.

Then I tried this:

ln -s /usr/bin/openoffice.org2.3 /usr/bin/openoffice.org2.4

and the applications run, but the launcher in my panel still has no icon
(because it's looking for the openofficeorg24-writer icon, which does not
exist). I'm guessing that an update does not (necessarily) move or update all
the icons (a find shows that there are 512 of them...).
