Hi, I'm using OOo 2.4.0 on Intel P-IV machine with Windows XP SP2.

I would like to point your attention to the appearance of the cursor in all OOo
modules. The cursor is pretty thick. I wonder if it is purposefully kept that
way. (The cursor is the long vertical line which indicates where typing will
take place. The cursor in OOo is the same in Writer, Calc, Draw, etc..)

I've observed that in browers like Firefox and IE, as well as in MS Office, the
cursors are slimmer, perhaps only 1 pixel thick.

Why I have made this an issue:
==============================

1.) The thick cursor makes the UI feel heavy and cumbersome. It is quite
difficult to tell the exact location of the cursor. Let's say we have a text
like: "<Letter-A> <space> <Letter-B>" in Writer. I now insert the cursor in
between <Letter-A> and <Letter-B>.

The thing is it is quite difficult to say (or see) whether the cursor lies on
the LEFT side or the RIGHT side of the <space>.

Especially if you are working on very small texts (eg. 9-pt or 8-pt text) it is
quite impossible to know the position of the cursor vis-a-vis the letters if it
is inserted in-between a word. In small texts, the cursor also occupies the
entire <space> between words and it is difficult to tell if there is <space>
between the two words on either side of the cursor.

A thinner cursor is best suited for click-and-type, and as I write this in
firefox, I'm quite glad that the cursor is always thin here.

2.) The next issue involving the cursor is during word selections, as in Writer
and within Calc.

When you select a word or a combination of words (like a paragraph) let's say in
Writer, I notice that the cursor superimposes itself ON the letter NEXT to the
selection. So if I select the words "I feel good tod" from the sentence "I feel
good today", the cursor will be between letter-D and letter-A in the word
"today". But more annoyingly, the cursor will superimpose on the letter-A, when
a better thing would have been if the cursor were thin enough to sit comfortably
between letter-D and letter-A without hiding any of them underneath it.

Because of this, it is hard to tell HOW MUCH has been selected (from amongst a
paragraph) because you cannot 'see' the letter upto which the cursor has been
dragged.

Therefore cursoring and selections are cumbersome in all apps in OOo. If a small
component like a thin cursor is deployed it would be a breeze to work inside
OOo, as there will be less confusion.
