Since submitting the bug I discovered a very similar problem in Firefox and learned a lot from the discussion at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423663 The crucial piece of information which was new to me is that on Linux setting a stack limit does something else besides setting a maximum stack size: it also sets a *default* stack size for each thread in a multi-threaded application.
