Instead of that we can just copy the bits from the external document to our internal storage. For display purposes we still have the embedded metafile (that since OOo2.0 is the original wmf or emf anyway!) so indeed we don't need to load and convert the external object before the user wants to edit it. This is the way how the new docx filter handles it.
