If you hold the Control key while moving, you can place an object off the grid.
However the object wireframe will still "dock" to any other object's boundary
that it encounters (even the object itself!). This makes it impossible to locate
the object precisely (except by manually disabling the grid, which completely
breaks the workflow of creating an image).

I suggest that Control-Shift-move should temporarily disable the grid *and* 
docking.
