In particular, it would be useful to be able to specify this behaviour when
opening a read-only document. This is a huge hindrance to using OOo to access
"legacy" .doc files, where the date field _must_ refer to the date displayed
when the document was originated. 
This behaviour cannot be an option associated with the (readonly) file - it
would have to be  specified before the file is opened. The ideal would be to
have a configuration choice of Yes/No/Ask.
It appears that my current MS Word setup also auto-updates the date field, so
the Word behaviour described by OR is not universal (maybe there is a
configuration item which I have not found).
