The ‘scratchpad’ may not be necessary. User could select from the current
document the replaced and replacing strings, eventually composing them as
temporary strings  (eg, at the top of the document) and deleting them after.
User could check in a dialog box the criteria and formats (font,size,italic,...)
to be considered in the search--an extension of the current 'Match case' 
option. 
For example, if the string 'abc' is entered in italic Arial and 'Font' and
'typeface' are checked, only italic Arial 'abc' will be found; but if 'font' is
off, any-font italic 'abc' will be found.
