2008 -------
Add a shape (e.g., a cirlce) with the fill area marked as transparent (50%
transparency might be a good value) to a slide. Make the shape fade in by a
user-defined animation. 

When that slide is displayed, you will see a white area (rectangle) around the
circle while the fade in is working. Once the fade in procedure is finished, the
circle is displayed correctly.
