I concur with later comments: expected behaviour these days (with Unicode) is
not to "protect" characters. Modern symbol-style fonts, such as from Adobe, use
Unicode to encode their characters, so fonts can be changed without losing the
symbols.

Obviously, a lot of fonts still don't use Unicode. It may then be useful to have
OOo implement an easy method for protecting sections of text if a user wishes
(ie. user selects text and clicks a "protect" button or right-clicks to select
"protect").
