Heh, 6000 installed fonts?! Even dedicated font managers can have trouble with
that number.

More likely to impact on users would be a modest number of installed fonts that
include some particularly fancy display fonts containing complex glyphs, such as
some Renaissance-style initial caps, very intricate dingbats, or fonts with
fancy shading etc, all of which take a while to display.

Some form of caching would be a solution.

That said, I've just opened a request (issue 91032) for a user-definable font
list, which could help circumvent problems.
