Please attach test cases. Even if it is more or less trivial to create such a
document, one saves a little time when dealing with the issue, and it it avoids
misunderstandings when the description is not 100% clear.

The hierarchy is as follows:
Settings/Styles defined in the master document will override the settings/styles
of the same name of the child documents.
The levels can only show some value, when there is an outline numbering. (this
is the same as for an individual documet - you cannot add caption with a
outline-level when you don't use outline numbering)
So you need to do the configuration for the chapter-numbering in the Master
document as well (or only there if the child documents aren't use individually).
You can use Tools|Outline Numbering to setup the style of the numbering.
After changing the outline numbering, you might need to force an update of the
linked documents (or just close and reload the master document)
