Version numbers help to realize how old an installed version is (splashscreen
and about box). If you remove this information e.g. from the splashscreen, you
need to have it available at another spot; the about box should not get rid of
the version number. The online update remembers you of the current installed
version and the version of the update, but that only happens, if a new update is
available. It does not help the user to remove that information for the reason
to avoid bugs.
