It turns out that the registry was corrupted and I kept on losing admin rights to various areas - more as I used them. I am now in the middle of re-building the PC by re-installing everything and checking each piece of SW as I go. During this, I am finding that I have some corrupt files on disk and I suspect this is the root problem. Many thanks for your time and help - you guys are doing a great job!
