There are still problems, but they are "softer" and don't freeze up the entire system. In particular, "open" and "export" do nothing, while "save as" can freeze oowriter. However, I can get to other programs, and Ctrl-Esc opens ksysguard which lets me kill soffice processes. By the way, this program reveals there are who soffice processes running, one zombie. Killing the non-zombie one gets rid of oowriter. The variable setting did something though, in that the menu fonts looks different.
