It appears that at some point since I made the original report there has arisen a sort of work-around. If no particular range on a tab is selected, then selecting 'selection' on the export to pdf dialogue will export only the current tab. This works quite nicely, and just about produces the results I was interested in. But the ergonomic could be a little more obvious when export to pdf is selected, so I suppose this cannot be closed yet.
