It is the following line in the filter/source/pdf/pdfexport.cxx source file: xRenderable->getRendererCount( aSelection, aRenderOptions ); Apparently, calling XRenderable's getRenderCount() method when the XRenderable is a Writer component triggers the switch to Print Layout.
