Probably that is because there is not English dictionary but I am not sure because I don't see 100% clear indication. http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries says to download extension for spellchecker -- the problem is there is no extension for English. I think that no matter what your language is, this should be built-in dictionary (I mean built in package downloadable from OOo page). So I am stuck -- I cannot check the spelling. Btw. there is sub-bug -- if spell checking does not work because of the lack of the dictionary, why it reports the checking is finished and why spellchecker buttons are enabled. This should be disabled if spell checking is not possible at all. This report is similar to: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=89343 but it was about other language than English.
