One of the main goals of an application such as a spreadsheet is to allow users to perform tasks easily. Values copied into spreadsheets are mostly taken from other sources, that separate them with some delimiter such as spaces, tabs, commas, etc. The most common operation on a sequence of values is to perform a same action on each of them. Therefore, it is very likely that users will place them eventually in separate columns. Forcing users to follow longer sequences of clicks for frequent operations seems contrary to usability.
