The problem is that gnome-vfs doesn't actually convert filenames from their system encoding to utf-8 when you request them, you get them URI encoded alright, but still in their hostencoding. So on load they have to be de-uri encoded back to their locale encoding, and then into unicode. And on save they have to be de-uried into UTF8 and then into the locale encoding. Bit pain in the ass.
