The bug is either in the variables implementation or in the documentation that explains how variables and user fields work. Of course, I rather see the variables implementation fixed than the documentation. ;-) As for how subdocuments could know about the variables in other documents: What about a flag that says "You are a subdocument" and a data field that contains the same of the parent. These could be passed/updated to the subdocument when it is opened from inside the master document.
