My software firewall - Zone Alarm Pro - had developed an internal inconsistency in that all external indicators in the GUI showed that OOo had access to the internet, but nevertheless access was blocked. A similar problem with Firefox caused me to remove all (nearly) traces of ZA and re-install, leading to access being restored to both products.
