(I did not know that I had to do something like this...). So I selected the only available option (1.5.0_16 provided by apple) and restarted openoffice. I still had the same problem. To be very sure I even re-started the computer and still get the same result. In activity monitor I see that OOo actually seems to do something, it uses up all the CPU time. But nothing happens even after several minutes. I can see there that the numbers for process changes, mach system calls, and unix system calls constantly increase.... Hope that helps.
