I then changed the preference to Arial font 12 points. The accents show up correctly. This suggests to me the fonts are installed correctly and the mapping is only incorrect in Openoffice. I will have to try installing the suggested snapshot on another machine (test) to be able to compare results with the new 3.0 release candidate 3. More later. Thanks for your efforts.
