------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Oct 3 00:29:57 +0000 2008 ------- NOTE: I'm deliberately violating the one-problem one-issue rule because there does not seem to be any mechanism for giving general feedback about the product. After experimenting with four components of the OpenOffice 3.0 beta, here are my general impressions: (1) I have not tested all of the components, but those components that I tested (Writer, Math, Draw, and Presentation/Impress) all seemed fairly stable, i.e., I never got a single crash. (2) MS Office 2003 compatibility issues are only partly resolved. For example, when an OO Math formula is inserted into an OO Writer document, it looks fine, but if the same formula is inserted into an MS Office 2003 document, the fonts are corrupted. When I opened an issue on this, the person who responded said essentially that he/she has no clue as to why this is happening and doesn't know what to do about it. (3) Designs of some of these applications look like slavish copies of the Microsoft designs. In particular, Presentation/Impress looks like a PowerPoint clone, with virtually all of the same limitations. For example, there is no mechanism for supporting inline formulas and other inline objects. (4) The OpenOfficeOrg team has been very slow to respond to non-critical issues. Typical resolution times for non-critical issues appear to be on the order of 3-5 years. This is better than Microsoft, but not much better. (5) Some non-critical issues are never resolved. An issue was opened in Nov. of 2003 requesting support for inline formulas in Presentation/Impress. This issue was discussed for roughly 2 years, with one person even offering a cash prize for a solution, but the discussion eventually petered out without anything ever being done. Overall, given that OO is free, this is an amazingly high-quality suite of applications, but there are many significant problems, and the development process itself does not seem to be working all that well. And, I have one very minor comment about the Issue Tracker system itself: It would be great if there were some mechanism for attaching a signature to postings and/or for seeing the real names of those individuals who don't wish to keep their names private.
