That is exactly it! The cell should not become blank. It should keep its content
but just undo the smart format. In other words, it should undo just the smart
format not the actual editing.

Because following your example, if I retype the content, Openoffice will again
smart format it. So, if the smart format is not so smart or just does something
in a particular case where you don't want it, there is no way to undo it except
trying to go into menu's and somehow trying to undo or workaround the "smart"
format.

It is a case of the computer thinking it's smarter than you.
