Squid caching proxy server authentication dialogue is required, but fails to
present, when Mac OS X 10.5.5 is configured to
use a proxy.pac proxy auto-configuration file.

The bug is evident with use of at least
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/proxy.pac

System Preferences… | Network | (select interface) | Advanced… | Proxies |
Configure Proxies | Manually
with a proper manual configuration does result in presentation of the required
authentication dialogue.

(I have screen shots, on someone else's laptop, I'll aim to attach the images
to this ticket when that laptop is next in my
possession.)

= Bug =

System Preferences… | Network | (select interface) | Advanced… | Proxies |
Configure Proxies | Using a PAC file
causes OOo to _not_ present the required dialogue; so

* checking for updates can not occur†

and, presumably

* Internet-related functions elsewhere in the application suite will fail.

FWIW: defocusing from OOo, applications such as Microsoft Office 2004,
Microsoft Office 2008 and Adobe Reader for Mac
OS X are similarly incompatible with use of proxy auto-configuration files of
at least two institutions:
http://www.brighton.ac.uk/proxy.pac
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/proxy.pac

It should be great to have a resolution or explanation for this issue.

† If behaviour of Microsoft and Adobe applications in the same situations are
anything to go by, I'll estimate that an OOo
check for updates may report that none are available even when there _is_ an
update available.
