One of the most common problems with a spreadsheet in the real world is the propensity for users to press the space bar to blank a cell. So 1 + "blank cell" = error in your scenario. What about the case of 1 + "1,000,000 people cannot be wrong" = 1,000,001? That is wrong as well.
