OK - once you get around to pulling down the View-->Toolbars-->Customize menu
item, then select the Drawing toolbar, then select the Vertical Text tool, you
can see that the Description states the following unexpected advice: "Draws a
text box with vertical text direction where you click or drag in the current
document. Click anywhere in the document, and then type or paste your text. You
can also move the cursor to where you want to add the text, drag a text box, and
then type or paste your text. ONLY AVAILABLE WHEN ASIAN LANGUAGE SUPPORT IS
ENABLED." Emphasis added. Problem resolved for me - but other users BEWARE!
