No, I have tried it many times. So you should give it a try too.
The procedure:
1. Open writer program.
2. Choose Menu:Tools->Options->Writer->AutoCaption
3. Check Picture and Drawing and set separator to "." for each.
4. Click OK to close the dialog. Now return to main interface of writer
5. press printScreen key in the keyboard
6. Ctrl-V to paste it in writer
7. right click on the picuture just copied to pop up context menu and choose
"Caption..."
8. We will see the default separator is still ":"(we want ".")
9. goodbye.
