OK. It's a good thing that odt files are just zips.
I did some replacements in the working file to see which component of the new
file would make it crash and I found it.

It's the layout-cache file.

I was able to open the most recent document by using the layout-cache of the
older version. I was then able to save the latest doc and reopen it.

I hope you can track down what generates bad layout-cache files.
