Yes, as far as I understand 71997 it's similar. Let me add a very common 
example:
Trying to link tables of sport results (Nine to Twelve), you may get the
following evaluation of strings to formatted numbers:
"9-12" => this year's 9th of December or US Dec 12th respectively
"9:12" => 0.38333 (fraction of a day)
With any other import method there is some trick to enforce literal strings,
except for "Link to external data" which always overwrites formatting and
values, evaluating everything in numeric context.
Link to external data works well with file:// links as long as the referenced
file has named tables embedded, such as named tables in html, named ranges or
database ranges in spreadsheets (no text-tables, unfortunately).
