I enabled OOo3.0 to find my Sun Java versions by using (as root)

update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/jre1.6.0_07/bin/java
50

(where /usr/java/jre1.6.0_07/bin/java is the java binary of my latest Sun Java
installation. I am not sure what the ‘50’ means.)

followed by
update-alternatives --config java

In Options... Java... the new version is now available for selection. The Free
Software Foundation version no longer appears, but version 1.6.0_04, also
installed in /usr/java, does appear for selection.

It was not necessary to run update-alternatives with 2.4 or earlier versions, so
perhaps 3.0 is using a different method of detecting Java.
