Additionally, I'd like to be able to centrally manage my own little library of equations and use them wherever I need to (preferably by reference). I have done some preliminary thinking as to how to accomplish this, primarily in terms of modifications to the OpenDocument file format. However, I think this functionality could also be implemented prior to any file format modifications. Consistently using Content MathML semantically bound to Presentation MathML should do the trick. Defining a reusable named expression in this context is handled by an "OpenMath Content Dictionary" (CD), which could define the structure of an "enhanced" formula document with sheets like a spreadsheet notebook. The details of how to package the various openmath files (content dictionaries, CD groups, signature files) into a formula document (*.odf) would need to be determined.
