If the system selection color is light, the transparent version is very light and nearly invisible. The selection is even harder to see if the cell background colour is close to the selection colour. Either provide an option to go back to the old clear and ugly style of selection highlighting, or modify the selection colour to provide adequate contrast over backgrounds similar to it.
