Note that font embedding is critical in some cases, such as scientific texts
that use special fonts for mathematical symbols. These documents become
unreadable (or worse yet, misleading) when default fonts are substituted, so
it's pretty much impossible to share such documents in the OpenOffice formats,
or to take them with you on the road without carrying a preconfigured laptop.
Just last week I sent an associate some presentation in .ODP format, and ended
up doing a lot of explaining about some mangled formulas.

Some PowerPoint add-ins, such as TexPoint, make copious use of such special
fonts, and embed them into the PPT file. It's critical to preserve these
embedded fonts when importing to Impress.
