I don't know why the help states that Mac OS is supported as a independent result but this is not the case and I cannot remem- ber if/when this ever has been the case. The problem I see here is that introducing a different result for Mac 1. could break existing programs as they expect a 4 (Unix in general) 2. makes no sense as Linux and Solaris also isn't handled specially. -> rupxamqon: I don't see why the downward compatibility hint in the help text should be removed. This function is somewhat deprecated and not recommended to be used at all as it's preferable to write platform independent code. This is still true, even if the function is not removed. So I think the best is to just leave this function at it is.
