OK - i could find the problem.

Obviously the "Styles and Formatting" tool palette was in the "tiled" state. (i
hope this the right wording or you understand was i mean) And the size of this
tile was reduced to the minimum sizem making it unnoticeable. In Writer i
noticed this, because there was no other tool palette in this tile, so the
window contents shifted a little bit when i opened and closed the tool palette.
In Draw i had a 2nd palette in this tile, so the window contents did not shift.

Maybe a suggestion for improvement: OO could actually close a tool palette, if
the tile slider reduces it to 0 width. Or it could handle such a minimized
palette like a closed one and enlarge the tile width to the palette's default
size, when the user toggles it's visibility state.

btw: on MacOSX, F11 is unusable, because used by the Finder. OO does not use
CTRL+anykey. "Styles and Formatting" has no default key binding.
