There have not been any comments on this recently, but no one appears to be
interested in adding this capability.  But on issue 10922 there are others who
mention that this is really needed by those of us who use tablet PCs in
university lectures.  After giving the lecture, the slides are often posted to
the web, so saving any annotations made during lecture is critical.  For myself
and I suspect many other faculty, this is deal-breaker.  I'm looking at running
Windows XP in a virtual machine mode on Ubuntu just so I can get PP and have
this capability.
