At least that's why I think the attached example causes a problem.
In the attachment we have a Lohit Hindi font with has no bold variant, before
being emboldened the 2nd glyph has a zero advance and the layout looks good,
after emboldening the 3rd glyph overlaps over the first two. The new non-zero
advance seems to cause the remaining glyph of the run to be adjusted by the new
non-zero advance of the 2nd glyph

Attached is a before and after picture and a hackaround patch
