There is nothing special with the pie charts here.
Enter a single column of data and create a chart from it.
In the data range tab switch to 'data series in rows'
Close and reopen the dialog
It is not possible to switch back to columns, as the dialog wrongly indicates
columns already.

Reason is that in that special case the range is split into single cells. When
looking at these single cells the Calc does not detect properly that the range
in fact is split into rows. Instead it wrongly returns the default 'columns'.
